We've Moved into the New Gym!!
One of the biggest developments in the Club's history took take place between 9th - 13th December 2024 when we moved into the new gym in the recently refurbished Victoria Building on Poulton Road, Fleetwood FY7 6TQ.
This was a huge milestone for the Club, for the town and for amateur boxing in the region and we are really looking forward to showing off our new venue to the rest of Fleetwood and the wider public when we fully open our doors in the New Year.
International Success for Tom and Freddie!
Fleetwood boxers in Sweden tournament success
Story by James Bovington - Oct 24
Tom Cardwell and Freddie Cheetham from Fleetwood Gym Amateur Boxing Club travelled to Sweden as members of England Boxing’s north-west squad and boxed over two days to win gold medals in the Gripen Box Cup held in Söderköping south-west of Stockholm between 27-29th September 2024 with the squad picking up the award for best competing club.
Tom, 16, was selected as the tournament’s best junior male boxer having beaten the Swedish national champion.
‘I had two tough fights,’ said Tom. ‘The first against an aggressive Ukrainian boxer. Our squad all got behind me and we put together a game plan together which worked perfectly. I knew nothing about my Swedish opponent in the final, but I got the job done with a unanimous win.’
One of the best things about being in the squad is meeting new boxers from different gyms and learning all kinds of new styles and techniques. It really helps everyone get better as the coaching team and officials are always there to support us. Everyone has each other’s back, and being part of it is a great experience.’
Teammate Freddie, 17, agreed. ‘It was an unreal experience learning so much and meeting some amazing people, having two bouts and winning them both. I’m grateful for the opportunity and proud that this sport is helping me grow and develop so much making me the person I’ve become. It’s all thanks to Fleetwood Gym ABC".

Take a peek inside as former Lancashire bingo hall and cinema is transformed into gym and community hub

A historic building has been saved in Fleetwood as a former cinema and bingo hall is being transformed into a state-of-the-art gym and community hub.
The Old Victoria Building, on Poulton Road, was for decades the home of Barney’s Bingo and, before that, the Victoria Cinema but in 2010 it fell into disuse and its condition began to deteriorate.
Around a decade ago the imposing art deco building was bought by Fleetwood-based dredging company Wyre Marine.
Renovation work has been taking place to restore the building and now an ambitious scheme to create a modern new gym, along with storage units and a community hub, is almost finished.
The plans were approved by Wyre planners before work, amounting to a “considerable investment” got underway.
Aside from undertaking a massive restoration project to protect the building, many of its original features have been retained, preserving one of Fleetwood’s historic buildings.
Darren Greenwood, of Wyre Marine, said: “Renovations on the Old Victoria Building are nearing completion, and we are moving into the final stages.
“On the ground floor, there is an accessible fitness facility tenanted by Elle Greenwood Boxing and Fitness. This gym will be dedicated to providing fitness opportunities for people of all levels and abilities, with a focus on those with special educational needs.
“Additionally, the ground floor will house 19 storage units, each measuring 21ft square.
“The rent from these units will help subsidise the rent for the club upstairs, ensuring it can continue to serve as a community hub.”
He added: “In the main building we have worked diligently and invested significantly to create a modern building that meets all the needs of our main tenant, Fleetwood Gym Amateur Boxing Club. In return, Fleetwood Gym ABC will be able to use the space and make it available for the entire community by promoting fitness and well-being, especially for young people, in a safe and inclusive environment.
The club will also make the space available to other community groups to help raise funds and support their charitable efforts.”
FGABC Comment: We will publish more news about this fantastic opportunity for the Club as soon as we can!! But in the mean time, we are extremely proud and grateful to Darren and his team at Wyre Marine for providing us with this opportunity. The new venue will help us continue our mission to promote physical and mental health within our community and further our aims in being recognised as a leading amateur boxing facility in the Northwest region.
Two more Fleetwood Gym Boxers selected for Northwest Region
Congratulations to Tom Cardwell & Oliver Sproston who will both be flying out on the 24th May with the Northwest Region Male Boxing squad to compete against the Leinster Squad in Ireland. Good luck lads!
Thank you for a fantastic event
On May 4th Fleetwood Gym ABC presented our last home show of the season at the Norbreck Castle Hotel Ballroom and it was one of our best yet!
Two of our boxers, Henry Abram and Jack Michael, both completed their final skill bouts and are now eligible to compete in open bouts next time out. In addition, the Show included a further fifteen scoring contests, in which we had thirteen of our own Fleetwood Gym boxers perform in front of a very supportive crowd. Everyone gave it their all and did themselves and their clubs proud. Congratulations to all boxers, home and away, for putting on a brilliant performance.
Fight of the night goes to Bex Stead vs Vaneeza Muhammad. A back and forth affair which had the crowd on their feet throughout the whole fight. Bex just edging the win by split decision.
As always, none of these events can take place without the help of a supportive organisational team so thanks must go out to the match officials and everyone who gave up their time to ensure the show ran smoothly. Thanks also to our sponsors and finally everyone who attended on the night to support the boxers.

Fleetwood Gym ABC Home Show - 24 Feb 2024 -Norbreck Castle Hotel
What a night! What a team!
Thank you to all boxers, both home and away, for putting on a great show at the Norbreck Castle Ballroom on Saturday (24th Feb 2024). Win or learn, you were all amazing.
Thanks also to our brilliant support team for ensuring the smooth running of the show on the night (and for staying behind to help clear up - much appreciated by the hotel management). We can't put on these shows without you!
Huge thanks also to all the match officials who give up their time to ensure the boxing meets our governing body's regulatory standards, and in particular to the Boxing Supervisor on the night, Mr Alvin Finch who spent his birthday with us in order to officiate and help out. Thanks Alvin.
Last but not least, thank you to all the families, friends and amateur boxing fans who came along to give their support. We hope you had a great time and we look forward to welcoming you again at our next home show event.
Keep your eyes and ears open for news of that - it's going to be a big one!
